2020-2021

During the 2020/21 term, The Nine prepared documents on the following topics:

• The European Strategy for Particle Physics (jointly with the 2019/20 team):we commented on the overall process and on the implications of the ESPP for the strategy for the Laboratory in the coming years.

• Maintaining the motivation of personnel approaching retirement age:we reviewed aspects of management policy and practice that can lead to underuse of the skills of those approaching retirement age and suggested actions that could be taken to improve matters in this area.

• Security and Safety:we compared CERN’s approaches to Safety and site security and considered how concerns that have been expressed about site security measures could be alleviated.

• Internal Communications:here, we noted that there is a perception CERN is less a common community than in the LEP era and considered ways in which a sense of community could be improved.

• “Best for CERN”: in which we considered how to ensure that activities across the Organization are focussed on effectively achieving the Organization’s objectives.

• Scientific and non-Scientific computing:we reviewed the provision and use of computing services for and by different communities at CERN and considered ways to better address user needs whilst increasing standardisation.

• Internal Billing:we reviewed the various internal service offerings, their billing policies and the different ways in which service requests can be made.
